Book Review : Primal – by Mark Batterson
A few months back, I had the honor of being asked to read and review an advance copy of Mark Batterson’s latest book Primal : A Quest for the Lost Soul of Christianity. Based on his two previous books and the raw honesty he brings to his writings – I couldn’t refuse.
Primal, from the beginning, becomes just as it sounds – a book about the basics. In this case, the basics are simply stripping away all the religion, the glamour removed from the television evangelists, and our own egos set aside for just one moment to answer some key questions:
“Does your heart break for the things that break the heart of God?”
If it doesn’t…do you do anything about it? As Batterson puts it, it is “easier to act like a Christian than it is to react like one.” For this reason, Batterson takes us down to the most primal command giving to us as Christians:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
No matter what stage you are in your faith or walk, you can walk away from this book feeling renewed, convicted, and energized with a spirit to DO something. Thankfully, the book goes on sale December 22nd and will make a perfect last minute Christmas gift for a loved one or the perfect gift for yourself to make a new number one resolution to do more for God’s glory next year.
