Bringing the MAN Back To The Church

Women – we love you. We love that you serve in the church. This message, however, isn’t for you. Married? Print it out and give it to your husband. Church secretary? Print in out and put it in your bulletin. When you do…make the title in HUGE BOLD LETTERS:

MEN, BE A MAN! STEP UP TO YOUR PLACE IN GOD’S PURPOSE!

Ernest Shakleton was a Antarctic expeditionist. In the very early 1900’s he boldly went to areas where no man dared. It was on one such expedition that he took out an ad in a paper that read:

“MEN WANTED: for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honor and recognition in the event of success.”

Shackleton had a ton of men who responded! In the end, he only selected 27 men – and all 27 men ended up surviving the experience despite plenty of close calls. Why would so many men apply to an ad that was so very unappealing to chances of survival? Because in the early 1900’s men had spines. What has happened over the years is a much different story.

God has given each man specific details on how they should conduct themselves in the family, the church, and in mankind. Many times, that role is left alone – leaving wives to carry on the work that MEN are to do. I see church after church where the “Amens” that are shouted are from the women while the men sit silent. I see church after church where the demographic of female members and visitors outweighs that of the men. There are a multitude of reasons that we can go into that lead to the “why’s” but I’d rather focus on the “what happens next” – because it has a HUGE ripple effect on the church as a whole.

In a 1994 poll, some shocking information was gathered together about the presence or absence of a father in a child’s future church life. Here’s what was discovered:

What happens if…Both father and mother are regular churchgoers

  • 33% of their children will continue to go to church as regular churchgoers.
  • 41% of their children will attend irregularly
  • a quarter of their children will end up not going at all

What happens if…The father only sometimes goes to church and mother goes regularly

  • 3% of their children will continue to go to church as regular churchgoers.
  • 59% of their children will attend irregularly
  • 38% of their children will end up not going at all

What happens if…The father is non-practising and mother goes regularly

  • 2% of their children will continue to go to church as regular churchgoers.
  • 37% of their children will attend irregularly
  • Over 60% of their children will end up not going at all

Wow! There is another side of the coin. The rest of the results of the research found that the mother’s influence had little influence when it was compared to the father’s. In the instances above, the mother was assumed to be a regular churchgoer. What happens if she isn’t, though?

What happens if…The father is a regular churchgoer and the mother irregular or not at all

  • 38% of their children will continue to go to church as regular churchgoers.
  • 44% of their children will attend irregularly
  • about a quarter of their children will end up not going at all

What happens if…The father is an irregular churchgoer and the mother irregular or not at all

  • 25% of their children will continue to go to church as regular churchgoers.
  • 23% of their children will attend irregularly

Are you getting the picture here? Men, you are needed. Worship pastors, you are needed to allow freedom of worship to men and take a deep look at whether or not our worship is suitable for all genders or geared more for a feminine taste. Pastors, you need to TELL your men each week that they are needed…and SHOUT it from the pulpits. Give men a purpose. Give them a task that may not have aspirations of glamour – but have purpose of God’s in mind…and see our men RISE.

WAKE UP MEN…you are killing the church while you sleep.
