Don’t Waste A Single Breath

While my family and I hovered in the ICU recently waiting for a miracle to take place in my mother – we witnessed a sight that no child, husband, parent, sibling, grandchild, etc should ever have to witness: a loved-one who’s body can no long support their own functions and, by necessity, needs life support – and oxygen constantly providing the air for their lungs. The rise and fall seemed so natural – but it came from a man made device.

If you have ever heard me speak in the past year or so or sat in a worship service I have led – you are bound to have heard me speak on breathing:

“Thank you God for giving us air today in our lungs that we don’t deserve to have…now let’s worship and do something worthwhile WITH that gift!”

Those words came from some powerful words I once heard from a good friend and missionary who is wise beyond his young 20-something years. I once wrote about the words Seth Hood first tweeted about in this article – http://weleadworship.com/breathe.html – which later turned into a 4-part series on the website.

His tweet was simply this:

…and a few short days later on November 23rd, 2011…my response in an article was as follows:

I’ll be honest. I’m a self-righteous, ungrateful, spoiled man in comparison to this level of humble on most days. I take most things for granted without even thinking about it…and here he is thanking God for the breath in his lungs as he first wakes up? Point taken.

Point needed.

With that being said…

breathe

…and give thanks…

…then repeat…

…and find your purpose…

…and don’t waste a second of it.

Thanks, Seth…

…and THANK YOU GOD!

Now, after knowing that my mother was talking to people one morning…then, only a few hours later had likely choked on something that got caught in her lung and caused a catastrophic chain of events that ultimately led to her death…I can say these words:

“I’ll be honest. I’m a self-righteous, ungrateful, spoiled man on most days. I take most things for granted without even thinking about it…

With that being said…

breathe

…and give thanks…

…then repeat…

…and find your purpose…

…and don’t waste a second of it.

Thanks, mom…for every breath of wisdom you’ve given me over the years.

…and THANK YOU GOD!

Exhale folks. Read the title image to the post. There are no telling how many breaths your lungs have taken while reading this article. Don’t you dare waste another. Tell someone in your family how much they mean to you. Tell someone the love of Christ. Talk to God and tell him “thank you”. Make EVERY breath count.

BREATHE….and make each breath worthwhile.
