New album from Chad Gentry
Today’s Song Search is a special one to me as we get the chance to talk to a good friend of mine – Chad Gentry. Chad is a great songwriter whom I have the priviledge to interact with on a regualr basis. We’ve been anticipating his debut album for a few months now and the date is now quickly arriving.
The album has its share of songs perfect for corporate worship like “Perfect God” as well as songs of personal reflection like “You Chose Me”.
Last night, I had the opportunity to chat with my friend and fellow songwriter to discuss the new album, his faith, and the journey to making the songs that will hopefully inspire many.
JW : Chad Gentry, whose debut album is scheduled out next month joins us today to talk about his new music and the inspiration behind it. Chad, thanks so much for taking the time.
CHAD GENTRY : It is my pleasure, my good friend
JW : The new album is called “Time To Shine” and, I’d have to say that it is aptly named. There are quite a few of these songs that truly “shine”. How did this work come together?
CHAD GENTRY : Well, the new record is basically a collection of songs that I’ve been working on for the past two and a half years
Therefore, a lot of the lyrical content reflects the different life issues that I had faced during that period of time
JW : The first release is “Straight and the Narrow”. The chorus is a powerful prayer that may seem easy to speak – but harder to accept where the narrow road may lead. We sometimes get a stigma as songwriters and artists that the road to an album release is a piece of cake with good content. It’s anythig but that, though, isn’t it.
CHAD GENTRY : Yes, the past two and a half years have been a rough road getting this record completed. We just released “Straight and the Narrow” this past Monday. I’m really excited to see how God is going to use the song over Christian radio!
The main idea behind the song is that the Christian life is difficult. Some listeners may not fully agree with the chorus lyric – but the truth is that God gives us the strength to endure. We are to cast our cares and burdens upon Him and in some cases he may take them completely away. But in my life experience I’ve found that most of the time God gives us the strength to endure hardships more often than just coming into the situation and completely removing it.
As Peter said, “I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me.”
JW : Finally, Chad, what do you feel “defines” you as an artist?
CHAD GENTRY : Well, that is a very good question! I think some artists are defined by their artistic content/style and I think that some are more defined by their ministry. I feel that I will be an artist who is more defined by their ministry. I’m the first to admit that my music is really nothing out of the ordinary compared to other Christian artists whom I admire – but I hope that my ministry will be one that is able to make a difference in the very volatile nation and world that we live in. I pray that I will see lives changed through the evangelistic opportunities that God gives me.
JW : The new album, “Time to Shine” is due out next month. Make sure to call your favorite radio station and request “Straight and the Narrow.” While you are at it, you can check out his website at www.chadgentry.com and get up-to-date updates from Chad’s Crew on Twitter at www.twitter.com/chadgentry . Chad, thanks so much for sharing with us. We’ll be praying that God blesses you, this album, and the listeners whom you have the powerful opportunity to minster to.
CHAD GENTRY : Thanks, Jason! That really means a lot.
