Pure Praise : “God Exists on More Days Than Just Sunday”
Pure Praise Week One – Day 5 : “God Exists on More Days Than Just Sunday”
Sundays are great days, aren’t they? The music is great…the heavens seem to open up and the cares of the world seem to go away. It is time to focus on God – and let everything else go away…right?
Why can’t we have that same view Monday thru Saturday? I love the imagery that Dwayne Moore uses in our series book, Pure Praise. In the book, Dwayne talks about a plant and how it can spring back to life when it is placed in the sunlight. When we live our days out of the sunshine – or, out of focus of God – then we will wilt away. When we put God back into focus – and step back into the sunlight – we have more life.
Take the story in 2 Chronicles 20 as a prime example. Here we have the Moabites and the Ammonites calling out Jehoshaphat…and there were some knees knocking – namely Jehoshaphat’s:
Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, “A great multitude is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea; and, behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar” (that is, Engedi). 3Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4And Judah assembled to seek help from the LORD; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.
The story, of course, goes on … and Jehoshaphat and the folks of Judah get a little dose of God. By the time we get to verse 22 – they are singing and praising and running into battle with a little pep in their step.
What changed? One answer…they focused on God.
Matt Chandler, a man whom I admire, was diagnosed with a tumor around Thanksgiving of 2009. He learned that he had one option and one option only : surgery. The complications were there – the risks of doing a surgery around the brain were great – and he knew that his days on earth may soon be limited. What did he do? He created a video to be shown at his Texas church that proudly praised God’s name and announced a victory that, even if his life were to end – God would be able to do something remarkable through him. He took a moment when most of us would give up – and praised God for giving him the opportunities in life…even in the face of death…to give Him glory. I could only hope that, being faced with the same, I could have the same strength and courage that Matt showed in that video. (You can watch the video and read more here.)
What dark moment or troubling time are you facing at the moment? Take a moment to offer God praise for putting you in that moment to learn and to grow!
